Experts are convinced that the new measures will make sorting easier for people and cheaper for communities: the updates involve the introduction of a system of symbols and labels to designate different types of waste, similar to what Sweden and several other EU countries use to guide waste sorting.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Previously, Ukrainian communities used different approaches to waste sorting, which often complicated the process and reduced its efficiency. The Ministry of Community and Territorial Development, with the support of the&nbsp;Swedish-Ukrainian&nbsp;programme&nbsp;Waste Management&nbsp;for&nbsp;Ukraine,&nbsp;WM4U,&nbsp;decided&nbsp;to make the rules uniform and understandable for everyone.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" data-id=\"1400\" src=\"https:\/\/wm4u.org.ua\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/06\/14-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wm4u.org.ua\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/06\/14-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/wm4u.org.ua\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/06\/14-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/wm4u.org.ua\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/06\/14-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/wm4u.org.ua\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/06\/14.jpg 1500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The key change is the option to use special symbols instead of the mandatory \u201ccolor-coded\u201d container system. From now on, their use is not mandatory; containers can be labeled with stickers&nbsp;\u2014&nbsp;for example, for&nbsp;plastic, glass, or paper. This allows for the use of a single type of container, which reduces the cost of&nbsp;purchasing&nbsp;them.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cLocal communities will pay only for printing stickers with symbols. This principle is crucial for the system\u2019s widespread adoption and adaptation. In other words, citizens will see the same symbols for separate waste collection at work, at home, in public places, etc., as well as on packaging,\u201d<\/em> explains <strong>Oleksandr Ignatenko<\/strong>, national waste management expert for the WM4U Programme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-2 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" data-id=\"1401\" src=\"https:\/\/wm4u.org.ua\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/06\/ass6351_55315351046_o-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1401\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wm4u.org.ua\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/06\/ass6351_55315351046_o-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/wm4u.org.ua\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/06\/ass6351_55315351046_o-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/wm4u.org.ua\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/06\/ass6351_55315351046_o-768x513.jpg 768w, https:\/\/wm4u.org.ua\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/06\/ass6351_55315351046_o-1536x1025.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/wm4u.org.ua\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/06\/ass6351_55315351046_o-2048x1367.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The system consists of approximately 100 symbols and labels and actually makes sorting easier: the symbols are easy to understand, the sticker colors are consistent, and the category names are clear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&nbsp;\u201cIt\u2019s great that the Swedish support to Ukraine has had such a concrete effect, and that we will now use the same symbols,\u201d&nbsp;<\/em>says&nbsp;<strong>Andrik Mols<\/strong>, Technical&nbsp;Programme&nbsp;Manager WM4U.<em>&nbsp;\u201cThe Nordic labelling system is not just about design \u2013&nbsp;it\u2019s&nbsp;about communication, clarity, and encouraging responsible environmental&nbsp;behaviour. These changes are expected to increase waste recycling, reduce the amount of waste in landfills, and improve the quality of services in communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cStrengthening Municipal Waste Management in Ukraine (2024\u20132027)\u201d (WM4U) is a Swedish-Ukrainian program aimed at systemic changes in the field of municipal waste management in Ukraine.
