The WM4U Programme – “Waste Management for Ukraine” aimed at strengthening municipal waste management in Ukraine – continues its active work on improving Ukraine’s waste management system. The Programme is funded by the Government of Sweden through the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA) and implemented by the Swedish Waste Management Association (Avfall Sverige) in partnership with SALAR International.

On 19 March, as part of a working visit, representatives of the WM4U Programme from Sweden met with Oleksandr Semenets, Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine, to discuss the opportunities for leveraging the expertise of the Programme’s specialists in improving the approach to the review and update of Regional Waste Management Plans (RWMPs).

Also, experts discussed the next steps in the Programme’s implementation, including:

  • further work on the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) component and engagement with SwEPA and UBA;
    • development of a draft law on landfill taxation and related research for its implementation;
    •  procurement of consulting services to update RWMPs;
    • review and approval of RWMPs in line with modern challenges and environmental standards;
    • optimisation of waste management approaches, including a possible phase-out of MBT technology;
    • coordination of the Ministry’s resources and collaboration with other international projects.

The WM4U Programme remains committed to supporting Ukraine in establishing environmentally responsible and transparent waste management practices.
