A joint environmental event for schoolchildren from the Bilyayiv and Oleksiyiv territorial communities took place at the Bilyayiv Lyceum. The children learnt about modern approaches to waste management and the principles of separate collection, and immediately put their new knowledge into practice.

The pupils sorted packaging from used food products themselves, using stickers for separate waste collection. This hands-on approach helped to demonstrate that proper sorting can become a simple daily habit. It is worth noting that the guidelines for the separate collection of household waste have recently been updated. From now on, local authorities can use a standardised system of symbols and signs to label bins — an approach already in use in a number of European countries.

The event also served as an example of inter-municipal cooperation: representatives from two neighbouring local authorities worked together with young people and exchanged experiences. Representatives of the Red Cross in the Lozova district were also involved in organising the event. Such initiatives help to spread environmental awareness, foster responsible habits and develop cooperation between local authorities.

For WM4U, it is important to see how communities put into practice the approaches and tools developed and implemented as part of the programme. The combination of training, inter-municipal cooperation and practical action lays the foundation for further changes in the field of waste management.
