The Swedish-Ukrainian programme “Strengthening Municipal Waste Management in Ukraine” (WM4U), in collaboration with the Ministry for Development of Communities and Territories of Ukraine, has launched an online course on sustainable municipal waste management.

The course curriculum is designed for representatives of executive authorities and local governments, the business community, and civil society organizations, as well as professionals working in the field of waste management.

The course covers key topics in modern waste management. Participants will learn:

  • what sustainable waste management and the “zero waste” principle are;
  • how the circular economy works;
  • how to plan a waste management system at the community level;
  • what funding sources exist in this field.

In addition to theoretical knowledge, the course provides practical tools. Upon completion of the training, participants will receive a certificate. For local government officials, 0.2 ECTS credits are awarded as part of professional development. The course is integrated into the professional training system and meets state requirements.

The course is free, and is now available in Ukrainian at the following link.

The launch of the course is part of the broader efforts of the WM4U programme aimed at developing a modern household waste management system in Ukraine. This involves not only infrastructure but also strengthening the knowledge and competencies of local decision-makers.

The course was developed by Avfall Sverige, the Swedish Waste Management and Recycling Association — a co-implementer of the WM4U program, which is funded by the Swedish government through Sida and implemented in partnership with SALAR International.
