A 2016 Scania P340 biogas-powered garbage truck has been delivered to the Luka-Meleshkivska community, which is part of the Vinnytsia pilot cluster of the Waste Management For Ukraine Programme. It was previously operated by the Swedish company “Borås Energi & Miljö,” which manages waste, water supply, and heating for the city of Borås in the western cluster of Sweden.

Our donations of biogas trucks are limited to communities that have a methane fuel station nearby, which Luka-Meleshkivska has. After visiting the community last summer, we think that donating a truck to them will bring significant improvement. This community is spread out geographically, with 13 settlements, which they are aiming to extend collection to through a newly established municipal company. They have expressed need for both bins and an additional garbage truck, since they can’t cover the whole community with the limited resources they have. The donation of a truck, in addition to the bins that have previously been donated, will help them achieve their goals in this regard, Klas Svensson, International Donations Coordinator.

The Luka-Meleshkivska community was selected as the recipient of the equipment based on compatibility and technical suitability.

The “Donations of equipment” component of the WM4U programme aims to enhance technical capacity for the collection and transportation of household waste in Ukraine by providing equipment such as trash bins, containers, and garbage trucks. Under this component, Swedish municipalities transfer existing equipment to Ukrainian communities, while the WM4U programme acts as a partner — facilitating the organization and ensuring the transportation of equipment to communities in four pilot clusters in the Vinnytsia, Ivano-Frankivsk, Kharkiv, and Poltava regions.
